You could come to Okinawa and do a MasterScuba Diver/Dm course with a bit of WWII history thrown in free of charge with a few wreck dives and of course living in Okinawa for month - the safest place in Asia for a single traveler.

I did my DM for free through work, and will be getting my instructor status in a year or two, and hopefully a coast guard six pack captain's license after that. Its been worth it so far, and an instructor and CG license may be the foundation of a nice little retirement job.

If you could pull it off, take the grant, do the DM and Instructor course, then come back to your school and teach as an extra cirricular activity.
Introduce kids to diving.
It would also depend on who the grant is coming from.
