i am setting up for warm-water diving right now. I actually have an 8lb weighted STA, but for warm water with a 3mm shorty that is overkill, plus there is no way I am flying with an 8lb weight in my luggage.

I tried using my Venture wing without the sta - the tank tended to get crooked by the middle of the dive. So I picked up a 4" piece of pvc, heated it in the oven and shaped it into a square, instead of round piece of pvc (I pushed some wooden blocks inside while hot to make it straight) then cut it in half lengthwise, and removed a little of the height (about 1/2 inch) cut strips about 2" wide, drilled a hole in the middle and bolted them to the backplate using tapered head bolts. I like it better than my diverite sta - and it's a lot cheaper, plus I can still unzip the bag and get to the bladder for rinsing without removing the sta.

Lots of other easy cheap ways to make an sta also. Might check out the DIY forum.
