I've never been fond of surface marker buoys just because of this type of incendents because boater's that know what the dive flags meen will stay clear of dive boats and the dive area anyway and the one's that don't know now have something they can snag you with. And some boaters just don't care as the six inch scratch on my al100 can atest to when I got hit five feet from a dive flag by a bass boat with an electric motor who thought it was ok to be that close because he wasn't running his gas motor.

I'm glad the diver is ok but if your going to clip to a bouy it needs to be a breakaway clip, because we are sharing the water with some inconsiderate and unedicated boaters.
