Can any one help identify this Black tank it says

made in Italy M8303-98/8727/ 060
TC-3AAM-244/DOT-3AA-3/80-REE 50
Original Hydro 11/98+

The Yellow Tank in the pic is a aluminum 80 scuba tanks.jpg

As far as I know there is only one Italian scuba cylinder manufacturer and thats Faber. It is most likely a 8 litre steel Faber cylinder, commonly used in double tank configuration in Europe in the commercial and Military world. As its black and has no real info markings like "Faber" it could have been destined for a military order.

Looking at the valve though, it looks like a Thermo or a Sherwood type valve so I would say off hand its likely its also a 3/4 inch valve thread, and not a M25X2 which is the European standard. Perhaps a further clue that it may have been initially specked for a specific use.

I am always wary of odd valves on cylinders, if its passed all its tests and you are using it then I assume its all good, but if not, I would also check on / or have the tank thread configuration checked FIRST to see that it matches the valve thread, before filling.

Looks like a "medium pressure" (3000 psi) 72 cu-in as was made by Farber. Its slightly smaller in diameter than the AL80? They were abundant here in the early and mid 90's. Farber made them under the ScubaPro logo.....

Mine is stamped: DOT 3AA 3000-92/9001/184 M8303 Farber Italy 02^92+ SCUBAPRO

Edit:

check out this information from an e-mail from Farber (they are quite helpful if you contact them):

Data regarding our diving cylinders are available at www.divefaber.com
Additional data can be found in the section Dive Faber Dbase & Drawings.

8303 cylinders are definitely Faber. Faber didn't mark the tank size when they stamped them for some reason. It's steel, chrome molybedebum steel to be exact, and was made March of 1980. The REE means "rejected elastic expansion" and the number after it designates somehow the amount the tank can expand during hydrostatic testing before it fails. It's an indicator for whoever is doing the hydrostatic test.

What you have written as 3AA-3/80 is more than likely 3AA-3180

M8303 == Faber

98/8727/060 == Year made 98 Batch 8727 Unit number 060

TC-3AAM-244 == TC = Transport Canada, 3AAM = Chrome Molly Steel. 244 bar working pressure

DOT-3AA-3180 == DOT Chrome Moly Steel with 3180 psi working pressure

REE 50 - rejection elastic expansion

Thus the cylinder if plus at hydro can be filled to 3498 psi at which point you will have a full cylinder.

I am not sure about the volume. If 20" sans valve then it would be an 80 cu ft

was made March of 1980.

AS noted above, what is written as 3AA-3/80 is more than likely 3AA-3180

I would say it is more likely 3AA-3180 as 3180 with a 10% overfill would give you around 3500 psi which 244 bar is about(3AAM includes the overfill already)
Fabers also often include litre rating on the neck. Something like 10l etc. Check if there is an imprint showing 8l on the neck

You are probably correct. I edited my post to reflect that. I have not seen a stubby in 3180 so perhaps an 80 cu ft.

I always knew REE value as the alternate criteria used to justify the + rating.
