FYI, in the near future, iDeco will be a pay app.

You could go buy a gift card and put that into iTunes. However, since there is a fee associated with buying a gift card, that's not truly a no-cost solution.

I don't currently have a credit card on file with iTunes. I put one in at one point to buy a specific app, and then I removed it. If your goal is to not give apple your card info at all, that won't work. But if it's just to prevent them from having access to it, it may.

Blackwood - You'll probably be happy to learn that iDeco will remain free.

More to come, but wanted to throw that out there.

I have a question Brock. When I go to the Settings menu and go to the "Last Stop" screen I am only given 10 and 20 feet as options for my last stop. Is there a reason that 15 feet was not included as a last stop? I typically use that since the platform at ABWA is at 15 feet :-).

The last stop was simpler to code for when it was evenly divisible by the stop interval. Stop intervals are 10ft (3m in metric mode), so the last stop would be 20 or 10. To break it out separate, takes mucking things up a bit.

And btw, the bottom of the lower platform (the decking) is exactly 20' :D

Really? I thought you were going pay!

I was waiting for the new version to buy it, but I guess I'll go down the donation route.

I have to check my depth gauge. I was there this past Sat trying out my new camera and I think I was at 15'. I'll double check it :-). Thanks for the update. Hope to see you there the next time I go.

ScubaDocER:

I was one of the posers you were taking pictures of at the platform where Chad and I were doing our safety stop. I think you were shivering too bad to read your depth guage.:D:D (just kidding) That is a very nice camera by the way!

Let me know when you guys are coming back to ABWA and I'll arrange a warmer day.

Just out of curiosity, where do you actually get the algorithm? Are the details publicly available, like good crypto algorithms?

And what kind of QA do free dive planning apps get? The consequences for bugs could be dire!

Matt,
The algorithm is the Bühlmann ZHL16/C with Erik Baker's gradient factors (GF). The algorithm is public, but is not open source, so each developer must implement it.

The QA process was 60 technical divers from around the world using it in dives up to 600ft. I didn't release it until I got a green light from the beta testers involved. To see the list, tap on the iDeco name in the program - You'll see everyone in the diving community who participated.

I myself am a CCR/MOD3 and CCR/Full Cave diver, and tested it as well.

And yes - The consequences could be dire - That is why so much time and testing went into it.

Don't assume that because it is "free" that it isn't rock solid.

Also - It has more features than a some desktop planning apps - And all in the palm of your hand.

...so no, it's not a Cracker Jack thing ;)

I didn't mean to imply that it was. :) I'm a big fan of free software and I know it can be enterprise quality. In the specific case of deco planning software some interesting questions came to mind though.
