I never thought I'd be involved in an "extreme" sport

Congrats on your c card. Have you been in the ocean yet?

I found out that diving is considered an "extreme" sport
Diving doesn't "really" become extreme 'till you jump into cold water with your drysuit zipper undone. :eyebrow:
Welcome to the board & try not to get too spoiled in that warm, clear water that you forget to check out some of your local freshwater lakes.
Kids & snorkels go very well together, & they're even more fun to watch than the fish.

Skye, haven't been in the ocean yet. Mexico next week will be my first time.

Bob3, I did my open water cert dives in a freshwater lake - Beaver Lake, Arkansas. Dirty water, yuk. LOL

Julie, Reeftrekker, Mike, GotAir, DocIntrepid, deluca...enjoyed your responses, thank you!

I have heard that from an insurance point scuba is considered an "extreme sport". Probably somewhere close to skydiving. The only extreme part is that it's extremely exhilarating!!

Welcome BluOrchid2! Scuba can be a lot of fun, and it doesn't have to be totally extreme. That's the beauty of it. You can go as hard and as difficult as you want.

Yes diverlady, insurance companies (at least here in canada) specifically ask if you plan on scuba diving or other "dangerous or hazardous activities". To quote. LOL!

I saw a list of the "10 sports you're most likely to die in" and skydiving didn't make the list. It's hard to take pictures of the birds when you're dropping at 120 mph though, & your chances of catching dinner while skydiving are near zero.

Heck, there has to be SOME clearer lakes/streams. For those inland mudholes, good viz is considered being able to see to the end of your fins.

Oh. In that case, we had good visibility. LOL I was still working on controlling my buoyancy, however, and got too close to the muddy bottom of the lake, stirring things up. I suppose when I'm more experienced, it would be an okay place to dive. Since I can't go to the Caribbean every month. But I am looking forward to crystal clear waters and a sandy, not muddy, bottom.

Loved that one! This has actually happened to you? :frlol: Oh boy!

Diving Roatan in July, then Catalina Is Calf in August - the first time I jumped in and that cool water went down my wet suit was breathtaking. I'll never hit cold water with a dry wetsuit again.

Howdy BluOrchid,

And welcome to Scuba Board :happywave a great place to chat, learn, compare, argue, etc.

On your first dives in the ocean, you might tell the Dive Master about it, so he can watch closely and help if needed.

Put Scuba Board in your computer's Faorites list, and come visit us often!

Hmm, what would that insurance company think of driving on I-95 near DC??? Hmm, maybe a pucker factor of 9.6 every day???

This more like venturing into the last frontier. Searching out NEW HORIZONS. Every dive a new experience and always learning. Glad to hear you jumped in and got your feet wet.LOL

Dive Safely and everything else will come naturally.

Happy New Year

Joe
