I don't know beans about DSLR cameras, but our research lab wants to purchase a super macro lens for a Canon Digital Rebel camera we bought last year. This isn't for underwater use, but for taking ultra-close-ups of animal parts. On land.

I have been asked to locate something that can "focus about 1 inch (910mm) from the subject".

Could some of you camera guru's point me in a direction? If it makes you feel better, the camera belongs to Dr. Mary Wicksten, who's the crab and shrimp consultant for Paul Humann's Reef Creatures (Caribbean) book.

Whoa David, I'm hardly a guru. I use a Rebel with a 100mm f2.8 lens but that is U/W and I don't know much about topside macro. It depends on how much magnification you need. They do make a 180mm f3.5 macro. Best to check with your Camera store. They also have a thing called a Macro Ring Lite that you see on CSI for evidence photography. Sort of a strobe that goes around the end of the lens so you can get close and still light the subject.
