Please explain....

I have no idea specifically why so many wings have a very wide center panel and are quite wide across their breath. I assume it is to accommodate a large metal plate or perhaps some think taco is a good thing? You tell me? Regardless, I do not like for the wing to wrap the tank.

The Oxy and VDH wings (and a few others) have a very narrow cernter panel with roll control bars. Maybe the reason that other designs have wider panels is to prevent the wing from being constrained when inflated by the large, rectangular shaped metal plate? This not being a problem or constraint when inflated when using a Freedom Plate or any of a number of soft plates.

And yes, those standard bent, rectangular metal plates were originally designed for double cylinders thus the need for a STA to mount singles or for the tanks to flop side to side without. Below, VDH Argonaut wing with roll control, narrow center panel and internal perimeter bungee. Very compact in use and cannot taco:

Another issue is distribution of lift. The Halcyon clearly has more lift forward and at least for me I need lift rearward. I need whatever little bubble I have at depth to be rear biased to keep from being leg heavy.

I ended up ordering a Dive Rite Travel. I was leaning towards the XS Scuba option for some reason that I can't really identify...but as best as I can tell by scaling the photo, I think the slots for the tank straps might be too far apart for my plate.
Then I was going to order one of the aliwhatever cheap wings.... figuring that even if it shows up late I can have an extra...maybe my kid could use it with my unused aluminum backplate.... but I tried and tried and could not get the payment to process
I was able to find one at a pretty good price A lot of folks seem to be out of stock with those too so I figured I'd jump on the one I found since I have a trip coming up
I was about to increase my price point and look again at some of the more expensive options
But I went to my LDS today and was able to put my hands on a diverite travel wing. It's wide open for the straps so I don't think fitting will be an issue. It looks ok. Would have supported them but their price was no good...and having just paid for 4 certifications + a refresher class + a bunch of other stuff...I've done my part for their cause for a bit!

fingers crossed!

I received a message back from Halcyon. Told me where to find the tag for my old wing. Turns out it's a Pioneer 27! I take that to mean that it's a 27# lift!!

I measured 21.3 pounds of freshwater to fill it.
By volume that measured out to be approx 7.8L. That works out to somewhere around 17# to 18#. There was a little spillage in that volume measurement, but not that much!
Now the ater wasn't pressurized filling it for my sclae measurement, but I don't see any way that 5/8 gallon to 1 gallon more could have been pushed into that thing.... something is off.

Oh well, regardless...I liked that wing

Mistake somewhere. Density of freshwater is 1 kg/L. 21.3 lb is 9.7 kg, so 9.7 L volume. Which works out to... 21.3 lb, oddly enough. 🙂
