I was checking the hydro date and found an 1 1/2 crack in, I believe, the paint. I'm draining the tank down to 200 PSI just in case. I was a little alarmed for a second, now I'm just a little sheepish.

I'm sure it's a paint defect. Pressurized steel tanks don't crack, the fail and go boom. And I've never seen a scuba cylinder do so.

Post some pics. What you think is a crack might paint peeling.

not to worry, cracked paint won't weaken the tank enough to matter.
Cracked paint won't weaken the tank at all.

Obviously if it is something that causes you any serious suspicion, you should have someone that knows what they are doing look at it. I agree with the comments that it is likely not an issue, but if it caused you to ask the question, be sure you get a real answer (somehow.) Something that would cause you to drain the tank down seems like something to follow up on. Asking that sort of question here is not going to result in a real answer.

What is the hydro date? if it's getting close anyway, might not be a bad idea to go ahead and run it thru the process.

Fill it to 4000psi and see if the crack widens :blessing::nuke:
