i posted here a week ago my concerns about being 45 and not so fit and doing my padi open water. well i travelled up to sodwana and did it with coral divers. It was FANTASIC and the reefs at sodwana are pristine and untouched. I dont know why i didnt do i sooner, The first two days were hard work but worth it, the ocean dives were incredible, we saw a humpback whale and calf, turtles, dolphins, flying fish (and those were all at the surface) underneath was undescribable. a riot of colorful coral, fish, eels, molluscs, nudibranchs. i cant wait to get back in the water!

CONGRATULATIONS on entering into the most respected addiction, probably a unanimous choice, on this board.
There are more than 33,000 of us, and we can't all be wrong, not all at once!
Can we?

Congratulations and I find it particularly encouraging since my wife and I are beginning open water classes this winter for late spring check-out dives here in Maine. We'll both be 48 then. We're both addicted to snorkeling now so what the others are talking about. What a splendid thing it is to be addicted to an activity that is good exercise and where living healthy between dives rewards you with stamina and fitness. It's almost like a fountain of youth.

May your dives be safe and frequent.

Pete

:cheering: Yay! Way to go. I think your check out dives were too easy, and you should do them over in a murky quary in 50F water :lol2: but - hey, great!

Wish I'd started in my 40s.

Congratulations! :dazzler1:

Your not anywhere near too old!

This summer I certified a couple, he is 64, she is 62. Both had the time of their lives and had absolutely no problems at all. In fact they both completed their advanced open water 4 weeks ago, and want to take the PADI Rescue course next year. :11:

They are both in good health and their only regret was not taking up diving years ago.

They of course plan to make up for lost time by taking extended vacations to diving resorts all winter long. I asked them if they want to adopt me and take me along, they just smiled and said I probably wouldn't be able to keep up and they had "other" plans for the evenings. :eyebrow:

Whoo hooo! Congratulations. Now the real fun begins. Just think of all the trips to exotic places you get to plan. Diving not only gives me something to keep me out of trouble but it encouraged me to see places I have never seen.

When I qualified OW and AOW last month, I was 55, there's another new poster, cgardinier, who qualified four years ago at 63.

Ain't never too old!!

Tom

Congrats, from a recent OW and AOW certified 49 year old. At 45 you won't be too old for a long, long, long time... Now, get out there and enjoy that new hobby by diving as often as possible.
