My buddy and I can't hear each others noise makers, tank bangers, computers or anthing other than our bubbles when we have 7mm hoods on. It is a little annoying. Is there anything we can do to hear better with a hood on? Is this normal or are we just going deaf. I am getting tired of poking him or yanking on his fin to get his attention. It would also be nice to hear the ascent alarm on the computers to know to slow down when we are ascending a little too fast.

Welcome to cold water diving, silence is golden.

In cold water you will want to be close enough that a quick kick has you in contact with your buddy and don't need any noisemakers or tank bangers. Simply plan to watch your ascent profile and don't count on the alarm.

The first time I was in warm water the cacophony of sound was also annoying.

Fortunately, hoods don't cover your eyes. Use a light.

Get some strong lights and use light signals. Of course this may not be viable in some conditions, but that is the cost of warmth.

Talk about hearing impaired - I've got one of those 12mm hoods from OtterBay, and you can't hear a word people say.

Actually, considering my buddies, that's not such a bad thing...:eyebrow:

Sounds perfect to me.

I have been staying pretty close to my buddy to try and be in touch distance. My buddy still needs a light which would help in low vis situations.

How do you like that thick of a hood?

I got one from Bob3 and it seems to work OK. In fact so far it's the best one I've had.

i like the silence when i have a thick hood on. 1 reason i go diving is for the quiet
