"Ultimate Survival Star Flash Signal Mirror"

So, what's the next best thing with that one now discontinued and the company apparently gone from the face of the earth? I don't mind buying a nice one.

(And by "next best thing", I mean one with a "fireball" sight that will survive scuba.)

A laser pointer would be nice, but do they make them waterproof?

I was making a joke, bad like most of mine turn up being. But yes they make them . google underwater laser pointer, you will get 132,000 hits. The one I saw was from trident. Remember water and light absorption before buying one. I was not impressed during daylight hours; never have seen one on a night dive.

I ask him if he has a particular safety mirror that I want---Ultimate Survival Star Flash Signal Mirror. He asks why in the world I would want to waste money on a mirror of all things.
It is generally small (albeit useful) accessories like this that I prefer to buy online rather than through my LDS. These items are usually much cheaper this way, not to mention the benefit of not having to listen to the sales clerk's silly questions (though I would not expect such from my LDS). There are several Ultimate Survival Star Flash Signal Mirrors listed on eBay right now, some of which can be had for as little as $9.50 including shipping.

I've said it before:

When I dive a location that is remote or unfamiliar, I take a small VHF marine radio in a waterproof box.

I have never been left behind but if I was, I just call and tell them to come back and get me!

I always have a small mirro in any case.

Since the LDS informed me that he read this thread and that my account bares little resemblance to our conversation, I think it would be great if he posted the other side of the story to set the record straight.

If I have said something that is incorrect or offensive, I apologize.

Try
here, or here(I bought this one at a sporting goods store. It even came with a whistle!)

If you are buying any of these from a dive shop you should be prepared to spend significantly more than you woould if you bought them from a non-dive related store. Somewhere around 200-300% more.

"We regret that Ultimate Survival has reported that they are not currently shipping items as they have ceased operations. However, we would like to offer you the best replacement for the Star Flash Signal Mirror, The BCB May Day Signal Mirror." http://www.bestglide.com/Star_Flash_Info.html

Hehe. "We regret that Tommy won't be joining us for dinner because he's dead."

Walter:
Assuming you have two hands, you can easily aim any mirror. Hold one hand in front of you with 2 fingers forming a V. Put the boat, plane or other target in the base of the V. Move the reflected light across your fingers hitting the target as the light crosses the base of the V. Remember SOS is ... --- ...
Reflected sunlight is much brighter and will carry farther than any light.

Great post Walter. Thank you!
