I can never think of a time you would need a mirror. WHAT???

Hey, everybody, the comment about the Salvo was a JOKE (thus the big, insincere smilie) based on Leah's DIR inclinations.

A mirror is probably a very reasonable thing to carry. A DiveAlert carries reasonably well, and in places where there are really rough seas or strong currents, an EPIRB isn't out of question, either.

I ask him if he has a particular safety mirror that I want---Ultimate Survival Star Flash Signal Mirror.

I have one - they are super! I mean I haven't used it in anger, but for the size of it - I can't think of a reason not to carry one...

Sorry, I didn't realize it was a joke (I rarely see smilies and when I do, I usually don't understand them). It looked like a serious post to me.

Hey, instead of a mirror, why not sticking an old, scratched up CD somewhere on your person when you dive?.. especially if your using it on vacation. Same reflective fun, toss it when your done.

If you search other threads you will see that suggestion has been offered and discarded dozens of times.... :)

I have been meaning to get one... I will trust your safety instincts that this is a good one! :)

I carry a mil-spec survival mirror tucked in the back of my wetnotes.

Solo divers might find them handy if they hear 'tiny bubbles' and want to check which post is leaking or where a hose or swage may be going bad. Mr X talked about the same use for rebreather divers.

If you're ever hung up on monofilament but you can't see behind you to pull the line away from your rig, a mirror may allow you to see behind you. A buddy is better, no doubt.

Otherwise, as a few others have already said, they have many odd uses besides survival, and given how handy they are, why would you NOT carry a signal mirror?

I use the back of my SPG on the deco line to see what the clowns above me are doing. Check the tank pressure, check the clowns all in one easy movement.

Better option: http://www.scoutgear.com/cg8501.html

Tiny, cheap... keep it washed off after dives and it wont get funked out. :)

note - I believe this one is found at most any store you can buy Scouting gear at :D

The masks reflecting didn't help those poor souls in the Red Sea this past week. 5 masks between them.... said they waved fins, a single sausage, screamed, and to no avail.

Seems like a mirror should be required for all off shore diving. If you are counting on a reflective mask, I think you are out of luck even if you are a dive master it is not going to reflect for you.

Leah,

I'm a divemaster and proud of it. That rating was one hell of a lot of hard work. OTOH, I don't think that things will work for me just because I am a DM. I merely think thaqt walking on water is within my reach;)

I don't know if the Red Sea divers tried to use their masks as signal mirrors or not. Or whether it would have saved them. In that situation, you have to use your ingenuity, and sometimes you don't have the perfect thing. You make do.

I guess I need to get myself a mirror. For now I have I borrowed the whistle and small strobe that is used on the abandon ship life jackets on the boat. And don't worry I had the ones on said life jacket replaced by the safety officer. No mirrors on the life jackets but after countless abandon ship drills I know there is a mirror in every inflatable life raft. But don't worry if it ever comes to abandon ship I will be glued to the guy holding the EPIRP beacon.
