Oh, Leah, given where you're going, just buy the 21W Salvo HID light. It's brighter than any reflection from a mirror . . . :D

Them things is blinding. I took my Salvo video 24's and sometimes use them singly.
Ouch.

If you are "up sun" a light of any type will not cut it, it will be lost in the sun glare. It is also worthless if the batteries run down.

A mirror has a much more intense "flash" then a HID will ever have. The flash and not needing batteries is why they are in every fighter pilots survival pack.

As for SMB's or sauages, they don't cut it at over about 300 yards in any type of chop or in limited surface visability such as fog, rain, or at dusk/night.

When blue water diving I have a mirror, whistle, strobe, and good light.

Mirror in high sun or when the boat is down sun of you (hint, a mirror doesn't use batteries)
Whistle for fog & rain
Strobe & light for dusk and night

A lot to carry some may say. Here are some clues:

- You have a light anyway, just make sure the burn time is in hours
- A whistle is very small and can be attached just about anywhere and be out of the way, just check it every now and then to make sure it works
-A strobe goes in the pocket
- A mirror - think about this, get one of the larger brass SPG. The ones that are chrome plated. Gues what, the back of the gauge is your mirror. All you should do is burnish it up every now and then with 0000 steel wool if it needs it.

Finaly if you are realy set on not having anyone get your life insurance there are marker dye packs, reflective strips to deply on the surface, and even satalite becons.

Catherine, at about $1000.00+ for the Salvo I would choose our 406 mhz location beacon, cannister, a signal mirror, and a strobe :D
I envy you for having that light though!

I received my Fastfine Plus location beacon yesterday...very compact and user friendly. It truly is 'da bomb'! Satellite activation AND local homing signal.

Leah, your shop sounds like a classic "we know more than you do". It does make for interesting posts on SB, and illustrates why so of us prefer internet suppliers, such as Scubatoys and Leisure Pro. A mirror is a BASIC and time proven survival necessity, requires no batteries, and fits in a pocket easily. I also like to be able to check my nose for flotsam after doffing my mask! Your LDS was way out of line for the attitude and misinformation.:D

Hey, instead of a mirror, why not sticking an old, scratched up CD somewhere on your person when you dive?.. especially if your using it on vacation. Same reflective fun, toss it when your done.

The Coast Guard and other emergency response people have reported that CDs are worthless. If you are going to carry something, get a mirror.

If you would like more info, please do a search. There has been plenty of discussion on this.

The ones with a hole in the middle allow aiming the mirror to some degree.

Assuming you have two hands, you can easily aim any mirror. Hold one hand in front of you with 2 fingers forming a V. Put the boat, plane or other target in the base of the V. Move the reflected light across your fingers hitting the target as the light crosses the base of the V. Remember SOS is ... --- ...

Reflected sunlight is much brighter and will carry farther than any light.

If you drop your mirror use your knife.Keep it shiny and use it as a secondary in case the mirror gets lost.Use the V finger formation to aim it.

Oh they want to sell me stuff. Tank bangers, aqua maraca, bungee wings, a bp/w that has this jacket bc like thing on it. Lots of stuff above MSRP.

It is just the stuff I ask for he tells me I don't need or trys to sell it to me at way inflated prices.

I think I would find a new dive shop!
