Well I feel a bit embarassed answering this question but - menstrual blood has a different smell than the normal one. Sharks are attracted by the smell of normal blood. Menstrual one attrakcs mainly mamals but for a different reason than eating... :inlove:
Together with my girlfriends we have worked out a seperate sign we show each other under water which means "I have a period - be carefull of sharks"!!!

hey, if any of you gals are in doubt and see a shark approaching, just grab your dive knife and stab the nearest sacrificial lamb.. er... diver... a few times and swim away.

can we say "decoy"?

but then again, sharks aren't really all that interested in
human blood, so...

I would rather have her yell at the shark than yell at me! I passed on the info and she still a little skeptical but happier. I cant wait to tell that her questioned generated 2 pages worth of replies as well as some humorous comments.

my boyfriend and i joke about having a "shark plan" just like that. if i see a shark, i give the signal, grab the dive knife, cut his arm, and wave goodbye as i swim for the boat. :happywave

"The story of sharks being attracted by blood are distorted. Their attraction is to fish and sea mammal blood. Human blood holds no attraction to sharks (unless they're really hungry!)."

Is there any info out there that confirms this statement: "Human blood holds no attraction to sharks (unless they're really hungry!)."

well... this is actually an open question. some people stand by it, some people say it is a myth.

i guess the most accurate thing i have read is that the three major species of sharks that are known to attack humans (great whites, tigers, and bulls) do so WITHOUT the presence of human blood in the water. in other words, if a shark is
going to attack, there are things that attract it much more than blood.

hence my statement that sharks are not all that interested in human blood (they are
more interested in behavior, location, what the prey looks like, etc.).

as to whether they are only attracted to fish or marine mammal blood, i haven't
found any supporting evidence, but i am just an amateur.

oh, also, the oceanic white tip is sometimes grouped with the
great white, the tiger, and the bull as the leading attackers
of humans.
