I would highly suggest not using the airhorn every 5 minutes. there range is about 1 stat. mile, so unless you can see a boat, theres really no point.

I was considering getting a diverite or halycon thigh pack to put a survival kit in, but the peleliu pack looks like a good idea, espcially with the dye.

Also, i think that having SOLAS radar and light reflectice tape is a large advatage. If you can increase your radar crossection, they have a better chance of finding you. (assuming "they" have radar)

strobes are wasted during the day, but after the sun sets and during the dark hours, they are invaluable. My dad was a pilot for the RAAF and has had to ditch over water. they found him at 3am, primarily because of the strobe he had deployed.

One thing i think that a lot of people overlook is water. sure your surrounded by it, but you cant drink it. I think ill start carrying 500ml of water on every dive, perhaps in a bladder to keep the bulk down. better safe then thirsty ;)

IMHO, shooty flares are a waste, but signal flares are a good idea. smoke and dye are better options though as they create a large visible and obvious patch which your going to be in the center of. so if you hear an boat or aircraft, "pop smoke" "roger, smoke popped" "Charlie, we have orange smoke"

yeas.

I would opt to swim for shore, personally. If not, everyone would float together back to back and keep masks in water using snorkles. That way any approaching predators could be sighted. If a shark comes around, everyone takes tanks out of the bands and holds them in front by the regulators/valves to use as a "blunt instrument" ram on said sharks nose. If the tanks are too negative with the air, leave the BCD on it and use your wetsuit for personal bouyancy.

Other than that you use all the usual tricks, mirrors, sausages, flashlights etc and wait for rescue, hypothermia, dehydration or other.

I would not wait for dehydration, I would drink the water.

thats assuming youve got drinkable water with you. drinking seawater dehydrates you faster, and it will make you throwup.

The French doctor and biologist Alain Bombard achieved worldwide fame in 1952 with a scientific experiment of foolhardy audacity. He set himself to sail alone across the Atlantic in a 15ft Zodiac dinghy in order to show that a human being can survive for weeks if not months by drinking seawater and juice pressed from the flesh of fish.

I know it's an armchair quarterback question, but having been left (with 6 other divers)by the boat during a drift dive off Belize a few years ago, staying put for several hours(using a coral head as a reference point), inflating my sausage (no one else had one), and staying together to be more visible worked out fine. Two divers got seriously seasick, but even with the choppy sea state, no one ditched any gear.

Having read all the posted responses so far, if I had to pick someone to be stranded again with, it'd be Doc Intrepid.

Wow this thread really makes me think. I agree with keeping everyone together and having at least a couple of sausages inflated. Save any strobes or lights for night when they can be seen.

Charlie is right about the mirror. While not a diving incident a family friend was out boating when the engine and all the electronics went dead on the boat (and everything was well maintained) The friend used a mirror which was seen miles away on shore. Friend was picked up by Coast Guard. And that is just one reason why I have a mirror in my bcd pocket.

Well, I am now convinced to pick up a strobe & a mirror.

I have the DAN tag on my BCD, it doubles as a signal mirror.
