Jokes are good. If I am going to die, I want to be with funny people. I drifted another hour with JB, in a huge swell, before we were together, and I was shrieking "get those sausages UP!!!" after about 40 minutes and he just laughed at me, which was very calming. I do freak, at sea, I'll admit it. Once, I was on a boat in rough seas stuffing plastic trash bags in my shorts.
Once...at band camp...

oh, shut up.

I can't wait forever for you to share your stories.

One perilous day, under the ice.....

Thank you for that list Puff

In the Scapa Flow trials posted, a flag was visable the farthest away of all passive signals and a bright yellow one the best of those

I would think that the only strobe worth it's name , would be a Xenon bulbed one like .. http://www.acrelectronics.com/ffly3%20waterbug/fireflys/fflyplus.html

Strobe ... something else I will be getting

The LED types have come a long way... I have the princetontec Xenon strobe, but would like to replace it with:

http://www.princetontec.com/products/index.php?id=19&type=&use=1

Note: High quality rechargables last a lot longer, but have to be recharged often. I like them because you have to charge them before a dive or a trip, when it is easy to assume the others will work.

The flag - that makes perfect sense, and I am surprised that no one makes a giant, yellow rescue flag. With micro fabrics of today, it should be easy to make one that does not take up any space. Will get Mom to make on in a couple of weeks - just need to find the fabric...

Those lights are too big for me. See, I have spent hundreds on lights and they last about 20 saltwater ocean dives for me. I just can't keep buying those things. That is why I was thinking a little strobe, turned off in my housing might work for me. (only used if needed, never gets wet....) I might take a picture. Very tiny and bright, designed for racing bikes at night.

Also, fdog, posted a streamer once with LED twinklies that form like a landing pad design on the surface that impressed me very much.

I think cat-eye makes some amazing lights. I think keeping it dry in the housing is what would work for me.

Catherine - what do you do with lights??? I keep this guy:

http://www.princetontec.com/products/index.php?id=16&type=&use=1

in a pocket, and it does not appear any worse for wear after a lot more that 50 dives.. It is not very big, the case is just bigger than a AA battery. But they also make much smaller and cheaper ones... that use watch batteries - I lost the first one of those I had...like to be able to feel it is there.

I don't carry lights.

That is the truth. I jinx lights. Last time I had a light was penetrating the engine room of the Sea Tiger. And three of the other guy's lights failed the first five minutes.

This is what I have high hopes for: I might tape it inside my housing, off. About the size of a fifty cent piece, very bright flashing, I think they are good for many hours. The other light, attached to my handlebars is a cat-eye flashing or solid "head light" about 40 bucks by cat eye and the size of a lipstick. I have the model light on my Ikelite strobe. The tail is a magnet that gets passed over the disc to turn it on and make it flash.

Frist let me say hi to you all, I'm Scott from Fairbanks
Welcome Scott, I'd love to hear how the AK diving is, I lived 8 years up there and diving never occured to me, then again I lived in Bethel and if you're from AK that is synonymous with living north of the lower intestine.

and because there are crittiers that find people tastey 1 or 2 BFG's.
Yeah, I prefer my predators to be land based, not much a .308 or .454 won't cure.

As for this thread, it has been a lot of fun and very insightful reading others experiences and insights. I hope it dosen't run out of steam just yet (any more scenario revisions Leah?)

I carry a bright orange lift bag, that i would deploy with my safety reel that I always carry. I also carry atleast one if not two back up lights which i would conserve the batteries and use it at night to attract a boat or aircraft's attention. You definetly want to stay together, and I would just let the current take me away. There is always someone on shore that will knows im diving, and expect me back. therefore if you get left, the CG can track the currents and usually estimate the abouts of your postition, and then you can help them out with the bright orange smb and/or the lights.
