I honestly dont remember not wanting to dive. I have an uncle that used to scuba dive, and I always enjoyed his stories. He bought my brother and I a video showing the basic skills for diving. At 5 years old I would watch it frequently while practicing my skills with no gear in the living room floor. Fast forward 20 years, and I finally got to do my certification with my new wife. This was in the spring of 2014. Spring of 2015 I finally got my cert card (long story). I have been quarry diving twice since getting my card this May but I have a tripped to the Keys planned for the end of this month.

My mom was a marine biologist when I lived in Hawaii, and worked at the marine institute on Coconut Island in the middle of Kaneohe Bay. During the summers I would go to work with my mom, and just wander the labs, docks, etc. One day one of my mom's co-workers (coincidentally a DI) asked if I wanted to learn to scuba dive. Thirty six years later, still diving.
Wow. I was stationed there as a Marine. A girl I was in love with showed me around that island because she was a marine biology student. I'll never forget...

For me, my wife is like a fish and I had no idea how to swim. She’s been teaching me slowly over the last few years with a lot of progress. Much less panic anytime I’m in water. I’m actually pretty comfortable snorkeling. She took me for a try dive in Okinawa and I lasted a whole 2 minutes before I panicked and shot to the top. I spent the rest of the time just snorkeling with the regulator in. We tried again in Hawaii with an instructor instead of her and that went much better. Still not certified but now it’s something I want to do. I love photography and find that having a camera to play with calms me down and keeps my mind from panicking.

My intro happened in July of ‘75. I was w/2 of my friends who I would snorkel and swim with in a neighbors pool and at beaches in our local area. Brian’s brother had a sailboat w/a deep fixed keel so he bought a used SCUBA diving gear package. AMF Voit Trieste reg., Voit steel tank w/snugpack, wt. belt mask wetsuit, fins and flex snorkel. Myself and my friends watched ‘Joel’ don all of this gear with glee and harassed him. He successfully used the gear for a few minutes and resurfaced. He then said what about us…did WE want to try it out. Brian went first, me second, and Tim lastly. I swam around. Much easier than snorkeling. I was ‘hooked’. Joel had to come down and get me to surface and told me I was using all of his air. 😠. 🤣. After that I went seeking instruction. I got certified in ‘77. It opened a new world for me. U/W archaeology, photography and sharing the experience with others.

So there I was, a young barrel chested Paratrooper in Iraq. Army policy was that everyone got free 2 weeks of mid-tour leave to place of choosing on the Army’s dime. So naturally I chose the farthest place away that I normally wouldn’t be able to afford a trip to and opted to go to Hawai’i*.

My plan was to spend 2 weeks surfing, till a Google search tipped me off to Hickman Air Force Base’s military-priced scuba program. Sounded like a cool adventure and I didn’t know if I was gonna live through the next 6 months so why not?

In 2005, i had a work contract for 3 years in playa del carmen. First day after arrival they put me on a snorkeling tour in No hoch Na Chich. I was amaze by the intra-mundo. Seeing cave diver going into darkness was something i never saw before it was jaw dropping.

I had a chance to complete all my training mostly in mexico. I dove after numerous time in belize. Made one trip to utila and galapagos.

Since two years now i dive in the beautiful st-lawrence in Brockville. (solo)

Be safe

When I was 8 in 1963, I was first introduced to scuba by the Mom and Dad Agency (MDA) in the backyard pool. Someone's gotta clean the drain.

This is what I like in SB- a 10 year old thread gets revived and flows like it was just yesterday, cool...

For me, it was after a hard trek in the summer desert. We walked for several days and it was so hot that we mostly walked at night and rested the hot hours under whatever shade some stones could provide. We saw a few lizards, some birds and a couple of desert foxes.

We ended on the shore of the Red Sea which for me it was the first time. Naturally, we entered the water and in two seconds I saw more animals than years trekking the desert, not to mention the colors. My GF was already certified but she never mentioned how cool it was...

I was hooked, and a week later started ** course. Never stopped diving since then, 1989.
