How to test burn time on a lithium battery without damaging it?

I've had my canister light now for more than a year. I'd like to do a burn test but I understand that running a lithium battery to zero can damage it. What's the best way to do this?
 
Gotcha, I should be in the water by next weekend.. * Runs to garage again to stop the burn down *

As you can see, it's complicated.

The takeaway for me is to not bother too much because my lights use inexpensive 18650 batteries and even a 20% capacity loss doesn't mean anything in how I use them. But if I were using an expensive battery pack and diving in caves, I would be much more attentive.
