Yea, maybe the OP could switch over to the YMCA program.....oh wait they folded up that's right. :shakehead:

Actually, they're back in action. YMCA is my favorite recreational agency, and
I think that switch would be a good choice. I also believe, for the record, that PADI has never prevented me from teaching a good course.

I've had this discussion enough times. I just stopped in to bug Walter. See ya later!

Please go back and read my Edited post.....and for the 'record' I have always thought the YMCA had a great scuba program,,,one of the better for sure. ;)

Scubakevdm:
Walter! I bet a surprise of a pair PADI Divemaster chevrons secretly ironed onto your jacket will turn that frown upside down!

No frown here, Kevin. I'm enjoying life!

Well, it has nothing to do with the OP, I was responding to my buddy Kevin. The OP has yet to respond to my original question, Why do you want to switch? Until he does, it'll be impossible to help him accomplish his goal. Maybe he's figured it out and no longer needs help. BTW, YSCUBA has not folded up. They are still doing business, but the YMCA of the USA is pulling out of the program and the SCUBA Program will no longer use the YMCA name, it'll be YDI.

texdiveguy:
Guess then he will have to try the 'new' Scuba Acquisitions Inc., but as I have read Walter does not like them either.....

Scuba Acquisitions Inc, a nonprofit corporation is the holding company and will be doing business as YDI Scuba beginning in early October. Where did you read I don't like them? It's not something I've ever said. I was originally certified by one of the three founders, Ken Nemeth. I've met Tom Leaird, the driving force behind this new incarnation of YSCUBA, many times and have a great deal of respect for him, his abilities and his philosophy on teaching diving. I think this is the best thing that could have happened to YSCUBA.

texdiveguy:
I think Walter is just a grumpy old guy.

I'm definately an old guy, sometimes I'm grumpy as well, but I haven't been grumpy in this particular thread.

1st my open water certification my instructor put 10lbs of weights on one side of me with out evening them out which caused me to roll. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure why I kept rolling yet for the life of him he couldn't figure out why? Hmmm
That sucks. It's too bad SSI doesn't allow students to speak to their instructors--otherwise you could have helped him figure this out. I'd switch agencies too.

Who says the OP didn't? You'd think the instructor would realise without having to be told, I believe that is the point jbop65 is getting at...

I personally wouldn't see that as a reason to stop using an instructor, far from it, but to each their own hey.

Who says the OP didn't?
He may have, but not until he tried it long enough to find that it rolled him:
my instructor put 10lbs of weights on one side of me with out evening them out which caused me to roll.
and kept on rolling him:

Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure why I kept rolling

Maybe I'm nitpicking a bit, but he invited it, I think, by implying his instructor was a moron while he dived with all his weight on one side.

I guess new divers might be uncomfortable about swapping their weight around underwater even when they know there is a problem, especially if things such as ditching and replacing their weight have not been practiced yet.

Thanks again,I understand what everyone is trying to say and it makes sense about having a good instructor,I do believe I will take my advance open water with PADI though just feel better with the instructor teaching it.Now is it still a requirement for me to take 2 specilty courses as well before I can take my AOW test with PADI? What two courses would you recommend?

Thank you

I would recommend Deep diver and Nitrox. Deep is something at some point in everyones dive career they want to at the bare minimum do at least a couple times and Nitrox you cant even get fills without being certified. and no for the Advanced. If you have an open water you can move right in to the padi advanced open water

You are clearly a much nicer person than I am.:D
