I was wondering if anyone could explain how to properly fit a BCD? In my opinion it should fit comfortably but be snug. I don't think it should rise up on the shoulders when tugged....so when you inflate at the surface it doesn't end up hugging your head. I also think that the shoulder straps should be in the middle position and not fully locked down when on someone. Am I wrong? And the cumberbund (for lack of a better term) snug as well but not constricting. The BCD should be an extension of you without being to constrictive. Please let me know if anyone feels otherwise. I have been searching for the answer and have yet to find a guide to fitting gear properly. It would be useful not only for me but for other fellow divers. My girlfriend and I are trying to decide which size fits her properly a small or extra-small. Please help!!!!!!! Thanks. -j

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head to me.As far as the bc riding up,i would stay away from a jacket style bc.I purchased a scubapro knighthawk a while back and would never go to a jacket style bc.

One other note.Make sure you have on your exposure when trying on bc's for proper fit.Happy diving!!

It sounds like you have it. Ron is right as well make sure that you are wearing the exposure protection so that you really know how it fits. It should be snug with the adjustments in the middle that will allow you to add a thicker wetsuit or to only wear a swim suit and not have to change bc's

Good luck with the shopping

I have got a Tusa liberator bcd it had a cumberband and two adjustable chest straps and two shoulder straps. I have removed the cumerband for better access to my weight belt. I just slacken off the straps before I put it on then pull them tight.

I'd just like to thank BOOinTX for the very helpful link to SeaQuest's guide to BCDs and their selection and fitting. I'm considering my first BCD purchase - and LDS advice and assistance aside (and of course, my instructor's) I am very keen to have every possible contribution to ensuring a wise and enduringly satisfying choice.

U R welcome! - I found this because I had already purchased a(last year's model at reduced price) SeaQuest BlackDiamond and saw it printed in their brochure!

The Brochure is no longer available,
if anyone still has access to it, can they post what it said here for future reference since this is the only thread that I could find discussing how to properly fit a BCD.

An interesting point that I have not seen here is that a Jacket style BCD should have the cummerbund snug to hold the BCD from riding up, BUT, the waist band should be loose to allow the sides to spread apart when inflating as to NOT squeeze the diver as so many complain is the biggest problem with Jacket over back inflate BCDs.

A 16 year old thread has risen from the ashes. Wonder if that is a record?

How to properly fit a BCD.

1) Pick up BCD and through into nearest trash receptacle.
2) Purchase a BP/W setup.
