Don't take the exhaust valve off, just gently wash it was warm soapy water in situ and flush water through it from the inside.

Front cover... Those little jar opener pads with like raw, rubbery neoprene on the back. Twist hard. They are easier the more you try them. But yeah, redonkulous.
