Whenever there is an influx of moderators, I almost always get PMed with this question: 'How do you become a moderator?"

Since people keep asking, I guess I ought to at least try to 'splain the method to our madness.

First off, I would like to point out that each and every moderator has been nominated by another moderator. We look for many things... time online, helpfulness to others, the ability to make people think, natural leadership, the ability to avoid controversy, locale, and how they would fit in with the moderator team. Oh yeah... you probably wonder how -I- got asked then... it sometimes helps to have a quirky sense of humor!

Along with the "dos" that we are constantly looking for, there are also some "don'ts" as well. First, you can ask what it takes to become a moderator, but don't ask to be one. We avoid people who are looking for trouble to begin with! :D Secondly, don't flame the other citizens. Disagree all you want, but leave the vindictive vective off of the board. Thirdly, don't brown nose... at least don't be blatant about it. Tens and twenties are always appreciated, but they won't buy you power here. Lastly, have fun. We hardly ever ask people who take themselves tooooo seriously. You know who they are, they only criticise and never have anything fun or good to say.

That's about it... the other mods might weigh in on this as to what they look for. I will be glad to field any questions you might have.

I would not be a very good moderator. I would be tempted to ban everyone who disagreed with my view.

Not that this prevents other mods from being mods. Just that I could not live with my own injustices.

Let me add something to Pete's post. The most important thing that I've found is to simply be yourself; be that good or bad. If you're putting on an act they'll see through it and you'll never be asked. Don't try to be something you're not, either as a diver or as person. Remember that the key word in "Plastic Jesus" is not Jesus.

I'm always myself and I'm surprised they let me stay on the board!

Mike,

I am glad you're a moderator. I think that you and all the rest of the gang do a great job. <pulls nose out of butt> Seriously, I think there is a fine team assembled here.

Personally, I would never want the job - not that I would be qualified. I just think there is too much *****'n out there for my liking and I wouldn't want to be in the middle of it.

That eliminates me! :D

Ohhhh... would I love to be a moderator for a day...

BAN, Ban, BAN...

Naaaa, that would be too much fun.
