You might not be worried about light discipline, but how about the other divers in the water with you? They're the ones who are going to be constantly distracted by the "emergencies" you're signaling, or blinded by your light in their eyes.

Ok, fair point. I do keep control of the light so that those things don’t happen, so that is light discipline, I just never really thought of it with that term. So, I guess I do worry about light discipline, and pretty things in dark holes under rocks.

I have this Sola light and soft Goodman handle. I added a bolt snap so I can clip it off, if for some reason I had to take it off my hand.

Fingers go through the front band, thumb goes between the bands and back band sits near the wrist. The straps can tighten so the light doesn’t fall off.

But my wife just asked me this past weekend if I knew how much I had spent on gear, and, while she didn’t say anything when I told her, I think I’m on a spending freeze for awhile.

My wife asked the same question and then gave me the answer. I shuddered and then told her that I was looking at a new computer for $1000. She said, "I don't think so." So I said, "Ok. I'll just spend $200 on some miscellaneous gear. See, I just saved $800." She couldn't believe that I saved $800. (I still may get the Teric) :)

btw - as a recreational diver I use a bolt snap to my right shoulder to splash. When I need the light, I un-hook it and then hook the bolt snap to a retractable line. I don't drop the light, but if I do, it doesn't go anywhere. I can hold it with my left hand and illuminate the lion fish that I'm about to remove from the living population. :) I kind of like the way that @JohnnyC does it. I may switch to that method.

Cheers -

People do sometimes drop hand-held lights, so be careful. That's one of the advantages of a relatively economical DGX600: if you happen to drop it into the abyss, you're only out $60. I can't imagine the horror of dropping a $500 or $1000 light. Some of the cave/wreck divers apparently use hand-held lights that cost over $1000 with no tether.

I know of one recent accident nearby where a quite experienced technical diver lost a $1000 lamp head during ascent on a wreck dive and went down immediately again to search for it with his remaining gas. He ran out of gas and didn't make it.

The light cord on my new Focus 2.0 is not so bad, I tell myself. :)
