Well, if you're not in the Cozumel area, they're pretty stinking rare. :D

I snapped a picture of the Splendid Toadfish while in Cozumel. Can I consider myself very lucky, or is it a pretty common critter?

I've seen a lot of Toadfish. Few I'd consider Splendid. ;)

I've seen them on every trip to Cozumel. So they aren't rare there at all. They aren't found anyplace else in the world.

Our divemaster in Belize said that the whitespotted toadfish we saw on one dive there was very rare. Is it, or is this like the splendids in Cozumel?

I see them pretty frequently in Coz but have never had a full picture.

But darned well spectacular, nevertheless. (You beat me to my favorite line!)

I have seen one on the S side of Roatan, two years ago. Pretty much so the same neighborhood as Coz above.

I have not been to Belize, so no first hand experience, but I just run a search in the REEF database (http://www.reef.org/data/twa/species.shtml) for whitespotted toadfish.

So, they seem to be pretty rare in Belize: about 0.4% chance (maybe as high as 2%, if look into the "expert data", i.e. if you know what you are looking at). And there are just 2 reports of seeing it out of there, one in the Cayman Islands, and one in Florida (0.02 to 0.06% sightings, but then, none by experts, so these two could be mis-IDs).

You seem to have been lucky!

Cheers,

Itziar
