I should clarify I didn't mean wearing a full wetsuit over the top of a shortie I meant would using a full wetsuit instead of a shortie add enough?!

Yes--that's what I meant as well. I taught for a dive shop that used almost exclusively shorties in the pool classes, and then I moved to a shop that used only full suits. It made a difference in how I had to weight students.

I would say about 6lbs less. 4 on the plate and 2 with the sta. the easiest way to know is to weigh the two and see what the weight is. then start wit that by removing it from the amount being used.

Hi,

I'm 6'3 and 88kg. Here in the Gulf I dive an apex wtx3 wing that has 32lbs of lift, fitted with a SS backplate and an STA. wearing a full 3mm and with a Steel 15L tank I carry zero weight, although by the 3rd dive of the day when the suit is less buoyant I'm perhaps 1kg over and have a little air in at the stop.

Im guessing in Egypt you'll be using 12L / 13L Ali tanks? in which case you'll be fine.

When the sea temp here drops closer to 20c I'll be in my 5/7 in which case I'll add 1kg non ditch able - a 32lb wing has loads of lift, so I wouldn't worry.

If you're chasing perfection, then you may want to invest in an aluminum plate and an additional harness to use when traveling. However, you'll have to decide if it's worth the extra expense and trouble. I sink like a rock as it is, and I have no problem compensating for my SS plate and STA - by the time the dive is over, I'm just a touch negative at the safety stop in a 2mm fullsuit.

Thanks guys, really appreciate you taking the time to respond, I feel a pit better informed now, I think I'll go for SS and use a full wetsuit if absolutely nescessary.

STAs come in the weighted and non-weighted variety. A non-weighted STA is not very heavy maybe a pound or so.
