Currently I am using 6 pound weights using a 3/2mm full suit... As rule of thumb, how much lead can I shed if i dive with jus a pair of shorts? at least this would give me a reference point for me to finetune during my weight check...

Assume all other gear remains unchanged...

Probably all , best and easiest way to check is sink you suit with your weights in the dunktank . Basically see how much it takes to sink it.

Yes, I'd agree... You should be down to nothing, or maybe 2 lbs... but we really don't have enough info to make a real informed decision... It's up to how much neoprene yu have - and you could be in an XXS in which case, probably 2 lbs, or a XXXXXL... but I doubt that since you are only wearing 6 lbs to begin with!

So, I'll go with the try wearing 2 lbs or 0 lbs... and you should be good.

Thanks guys. I wearing an ML suit... 3mm gloves.... no booties...

will probably try for 4 lbs first and work my way down....

For me, a full 3mm is about 4 lb of weight delta compared to no suit.

Doesn't he need about 3.5 #s to account for the bouyancy of his AL80?

Thats very personal question depending body characteristics, how comfy you are UW etc.
Personally I don't need any weights with AL80/3mm full neoprene suit in fresh water, and in sea 3lbs is enough. So as I mentioned it's possible to be over weigted without a suit as I am.
Neutral boyancy in general is a bit more complicated thing than tank boyancy alone..

All depend on how negative the rest of his gear is . (fins , reg , BC , BP etc etc )
