WOW! I totally underestimated the addiction.
Yup ... but it's healthier than cocaine ... and legal ... :D

A really good DPV alone runs in the neighborhood of $4,000.

Basic tech gear (7 first stages, 6 second stages, 5 SPGs, twin tanks & manifolds & bands, tech wing and backplate(s) etc) will run in the neighborhood of $10,000.

This particular survey is really on the lite side.

I saw someone in a Sams Club the other day that had on a GratefulDiver t-shirt

On your current set up, not over your lifetime
In my current inventory: I started to add up just major items. I got to over $11000.00 and quit.

I've easily spent over $25000.00 in my 30 years of diving on equipment.

I clicked < $1000 but my LDS is having a 30-50% oof sale today thru Sunday and I'm sitting right in front of the store right now trying to get my wife on the phone....

How about "single attorney with a gear buying problem."

Three drysuits, two sets of doubles, single tanks, stages, three BPs, three wings, HID, backups, three undergarments, backup lights, like 12 masks, argon bottles, four sets of regs, three sets of fins, computer/bottom timer/compass, a whole slew of stuff in the save-a-dive kit, and an x-scooter.

$20k easily.

That sounds about right; same as me:

DPV $4000
Drysuit $2000
Woolies $500
3 sets of doubles $2500
6 complete regs $4000
Argon bottle w/ DIN & reg $500
4 deco bottles w/ DIN $1000
2 backplates & wings $1000
4 steel 80s w/ DIN $1500
Lights $1000
2 computers & compass $1000
Tech certifications $2000

Total so far $21K+

Then in addition there is the gear that has worn out long ago:

Jacket B/C $350 (donated to local university)
El Cheapo first reg $300 (donated to local university)
Wing B/C $500 (completely worn out)
2 wetsuits $600 (completely worn out)
Aluminum tanks $200 (donated to local university)
Old masks $150 (completely worn out)
Hoods & gloves & boots $500 (completely worn out)

Wasted total $2K

I know people who spend a ton more than all this on horses or cars, however. So overall scuba is not a bad deal, for those who can afford it all. All of it. Meaning the exotic travel as well. For me, the typical trip is $2500 to $5000 per diver.

Thus, although expensive, scuba overall probably saves me money because I cannot waste any cash on other junk. And the vacations are priceless.

For everything else there is simply MasterCard !

Maybe that is why you only have $1000 of equipment. STOP asking your wife. The last time that my wife *****ed at me for spending money on gear, I gave her a Hallmark card and in the card was a bumber sticker that said "My wife said she will divorce me if I buy one more thing for scuba diving" and then on the bottom of the sticker it said, "I sure am going to miss my wife".

btw, its on the bumber of her truck, just as a reminder:D
