Considering all the agencies from recreactional to technical, including professional, how many divers do you think there are? Of that number, how many, or what percent do you think do more than 20 dives a year?

Maybe 2 million"active" world wide- A lot less doing 20 or more open water dives per annum.

I tried researching this a couple of years back. None of the agencies (NAUI, PADI, BSAC, YMCA for starters) would not give a count. What did come out as a general census in Europe and North America was less than 1% of the population were certified.

There is a website online (I didn't book mark it so I don't remember the url) that gave some stats. The person who posted the site had conducted some research for his life insurance policy. His general consensus was less than 1% of the population of the US had scuba certification. The whole point of his study was for his life insurance polity. His point being he was not at a great risk while diving, therefore his insurance policy should be at a lower rate. Interesting.....
