How many certified divers are there in the world?

I am writing a paper for which I need to have an approximate figure about the size of global dive industry. Is there any way to find out the total certifications issued by major certification agencies like PADI, NAUI, SSI etc?

Any other relevant statistics could also be useful.

Sinbad.. Did you try sending the agencies an email and ask?
You should be able to find their email addresses on their websites.

I would say it would be almost impossible to know.

As far as PADI they give out different numbers for each rec. c-card they send out. Some divers would be counted twice, or more times

Plus how many of those divers have gotten training from other organizations. So you can't get a number from each agency and add them all together.

Plus how many agencies keep track of divers that have died in order to remove them from the list of live divers.
