If you just open the valve all the way w/ no regulator attached, how long does it take to empty a totally full AL80 (3000 psi -> 0 psi)? This is with one of the newer Genesis valves (I think they flow a little better)?

Try it and let us know :) Just make sure the tank is strapped down, nothing loose is in the area, and you are wearing earplugs.

I dunno ... but I emptied one in about 18 minutes when I was a new diver. I'd be willing to bet it wouldn't have emptied much faster your way ... ;)

I would like to see one explode...

There was a Myth Buster program a couple of years ago where they were testing Spielberg's Jaws exploding tank film sequence. They ended up putting a charge on the tank in a shipping container. The aftermath was impressive.

This is one I can answer, because i've tryed it.
It takes a VERY VERY VERY long time.Because if you go this way to empty a tank the valve will freeze over and be a big lump of ice:D
1st time I did this was on Curacao and it froze
2nd time I did it back home and it froze even worse:rofl3:
If you want to empty a tank,do it slow and it will take hours,
do it fast and it will take day's:no

Well, I had a tank about half full that needed to get a dip tube put back on...it emptied in just a few minutes, like, 5.

Considering the fact that you can breathe one down in an hour or two at 30 feet or less, I don't see why it should take, as the user above me said, "hours" or "days" with the valve open all the way.

They actually empty quite quickly. You can completely empty a al 80 in about 45 seconds or less by opening the valve and letting it blast out. I remove a LP hose from a reg and open up the tank to demonstate the value of rapid valve shutdowns to my tech students. Just don't do it with an old scuba pro piston reg. Once time the scintered metal filter in the fist stage dissintegrated and deposited bits of metal all through the reg.
