You'll get response from right after OW to wait until you have 20 to 25 dives. There are several threads about this over the past 4 years. IMHO, you should wiat until you have 20 to 25 dives so you have the skill and ability to properly do some of the tasks involved. Your bouyancy control should be very good. You should also have some reasonable idea of what your SAC rate is for planning purposes IMHO. Unlike many other AOW courses I expect my AOW's to be able to plan the dives they are going to.

I was going to get my AOW right after my OW, and I'm VERY glad I didn't. After 10 dives I feel like I've just got my buoyancy and trim where I can relax and enjoy. And my SAC is just getting into the average range of about 0.75 or so. I'll wait until AT LEAST 20-25 dives, plus a lot of time in my pool practicing drills. My guess is I'll be closer to 50 dives before I take the class, sometime next year.

In my humble opinion, I think 20 dives is a good number.... I was being persuaded to go after 10 but in all honesty, I am glad I waited. Between the 10 and 20 dives, I learned a great deal more.

I feel OW is just a level that lets others know we are able to "learn" how to dive. AOW is just the next step in the learning curve. Take your time and enjoy the experience.

I am just finishing up my AOW class with a total of 15 dives. I have none real well and think the number of dives is not the important factor,,,,it is how comfortable you are in scuba and also what does your OW instructor feel and say some of the other adv. divers you may know. I would go for it!!

ok thanks for all advise..all will be taken in depth, but,,,what are all of these accronyms?
sac rate? imho?....... holy @#$%^ am i confused now??oi :06:

SAC rate is your air consumption rate in cubic feet/min.

My LDS won't do a AOW unless you have at least 20 dives and they prefere 25. They might wave this if you dive with them and they know that you are a able diver and ready for AOW.

absolutley nothin wrong with doin a few dives before your AOW. I see myself when students come to do their Advanced, the different between the ones who have dived a bit themselves, compared to the ones who got their certifications the day before.

It's also a lot more beneficial as your comfortable with the basics etc.
