How keep water from entering First Stage

Hello scubaboard this is my first post!!

I just finished my open water and advanced open water with Padi in Feb.
I did my pool training here in Canada and the dives in Jamaica.

At both locations I was shown to clean the water from the first stage by using tank air to blow the water off the dust cap and from the reg.

I loved the diving so, I just bought equipment and have a nice new Oceanic GT3/CDX5 with Dry Valve Technology regulator setup. I was reading the manual and it says to never us tank air to blow off the regualtor.

Should I be wiping the water off the regulator or blowing it off? How does everyone else get the water away from the regulator input.

Interesting user instructions !!!

I wipe most of the standing water off with a towel, blow out the dust cap and cover.

Maybe someone with a greater level of experience with this particular reg will chime in here.

Follow the instructions in the manuel that came with the reg.....use the air from the tank to dry the dust cap and keep the reg dry by always putting the dust cap in place when not attached to the tank

I agree wth the other posters, just wipe off the large amounts of standing water, and blast the dust cap to dry it. The whole point with the DVT is to protect from water entering anyway. Good choice on the reg, it's a good one, I own two of them with Alpha 8 octopus'.

Thanks for the advice, I will dry off the reg with a towel and blow off the dust cap.

I am from Mississauga. I bought all the stuff to dive up here and can't wait for it to get warm enough for the charters to start going.

I haven't seen the manual, but I'm guessing that they are concerned the air pressure from blowing off the reg with compressed air might defeat the Dry Valve Technology and force water into the reg. Does that make sense?

Many years ago, when I was learning the basics of SCUBA, I was taught to wipe the dust cap with a towel. The possible problem from using tank air to dry the dust cap is the destination of the water after leaving the dust cap. If the diver does not tilt the hole in the first stage down (and somewhat away) from the air, then it is possible to get moisture in the first stage, which....is.....bad.

However, after 50+ dives, I still use compressed air to clean my dust cap, however I pay very close attention to the location of the first stage opening.

You could always keep the dust cap off of the first stage....ie, cut the rope or rubber holding the dust cap on your reg. Leave it on the boat, put it back on when you get out of the water, it never gets water on itself.

Whaddya mean warm enough? I assume you'll be doing a lot of dive in Lake Ontario then? If you don't mind me asking, who are you going to be doing charters with, I've never had the chance to dive Ontario yet. My shop runs charters on the Long Point area of Lake Erie if you're ever interested in diving down here, just send me a PM and I can get you any information you need.

I am ready!, Got my dry suit and done a couple of pool dives with it. I just can't find anyone going out yet.

I am going to join the Mississauga Scuba Club. They do the charters. Also there is a weekly boat that goes out from Oakville. I just haven't hooked up with anyone diving here in the winter yet.

If I am going to be down that way, (which I may in the summer). I'll look you up. Thanks Jim
