How effective are undergarments in adding warmth when worn under wetsuits?

I dive a 3mm with a 3mm vest down to the high 40°F's. I layer 2 polyolefin (2mm equivalent) underneath (and my suit fits well and has great seals). The Polyolefin doesn't add buoyancy so I don't need added weight. I can get by with only 12#.
