How do you pronounce......

MARES. Is it like the planet, "Mars" or is it like a bunch of female horses, "Mares"?

Help settle a bet.

UK way seems to be either:-

Mah-rez or sometimes Mare-es

Dr. John is correct: "Mah-rez" with the accent on the first syllable. Comes from the Italian "mare"= ocean (mah-reh)

Of course, it makes sense now as to why it is pronounced mah-res. I had forgotten that the swiss were masters of many languages.

No joke....My first reg was a Mares. Everyone in the shop pronounced Mares like a horse. Then a few years later I was back in the shop and it had changed to Maries. Many of the shops around here, that I have been in, now pronounce it Mah-rez.
I've just given up on trying to decide which it is...
