Why don't you use you Dive Alert underwater ??

I have a Dive Alert too. (They don't work UW.) I use a carabiner against my tank if I really feel a need to make noise UW.

Also have a sausage, strobe, and a mirror.

Clench your left hand in a fist. Open your right hand flat. Bang your right palm onto the top of your left fist. Works like a charm for underwater noise! Try it, and you'll see.

btw, i have a sausage, and use my knife to bang my tank if ABSOLUTELY necessary. I always resist the urge to scream through the reg, though!

I have found that taking my reg out and yelling is the eisiest way but in a pinch I ususally pickup a rock (or similar marine creature ) and bang on my tank. I also use a small flasher, safety sausage, and dive slate.

My Dive-Alert works under water ..... because it's a SubDuck !!!
