for archival and photo library management, once very good option is iView Media Pro, which is available for both PCs and Macs. You might want to check it out. We used it to great effect for managing millions of images (yes, millions, tho grouped by project into groups of 20k-100k or so) at a large ad agency I worked at last year.

I have a 250GB drive on my desktop, and a 250GB external drive. I put my photo's in both places. In addition I generally do a DVD backup of my photo folder a few times a year, so that is three places.

There are a lot of options, RAID, DVD, multiple HD's, IMO the main thing is to have them in at LEAST two places.
