How do I detune my oceanic reg?

You don't "detune" a servo regulator, you just set it.

BTW, I notice the Omega2 and the Zeta are not in the current Oceanic catalog, or on the website. I think the curse of these designs was that, being very svelte and colorful, then tended to appeal to novice divers, the very people least able to cope with their idiosyncrasies.

I don't know what happened to the OMEGA2, though a little wet it was, head and shoulders above all others, my favorite reg, esp once a diaphram 2nd stage became available. I think you can still get it in Australia.

I tend to agree with you, but Oceanic's tuning instructions for the Zeta say to adjust the little diaprhragm screw (which is essentially a lever height adjustment) until the stage just stops leaking, then out another 1/4 turn for a primary, and 1/2 turn for a octopus. So Oceanic seems to be under the impression you can.

The manual said much the same thing with the Omega II, but after talking with Oceanic and much playing with it, I’d describe it not really as an adjustment, but rather as a range in which you sought the "sweet spot." Face it, servos are kind of on/off binary devices. Perhaps the Zeta's different?

The Zeta, like the Omega2 it is based on, is way down the list of regulators and inexperienced owner ought to be messing with - the are quirky and oversensitive. Some people love that, others hate it. They have some oddities in how they perform that take some getting used to, mainly the tendency to free flow and give you huge blasts of air if you breathe to deeply or quickly. But your Zeta shouldn't be hissing all the time, so take it back to the shop.

I like how the reg breathes and I don't mind it being sensitive when it's out of my mouth, but I don't like it hissing and leaking air all the time. This is a new issue.

In my defence, I bought the reg because it was a very cheap way to get a really good first stage, I was just hoping not to have to replace the second stage. I didn't buy it because it was svelte! I DO appreciate it's virtues- it's a dry, easy breather. It's also a PITA. I guess you can't have everything.

It's the same. Same "sweet spot" hunt.

I had this problem when my zeta was right out of the box and again after about 40 dives. It would be nice if it wasn't as touchy, but it seems to hold it's setting pretty well. It was just a slight hiss the second time, and it took a minute to fix.
