It's hard to find a pool that will let you do it, but if you can, circuit training in full gear (laps at a good clip with skills at each end) is a great way to do both.

So I wonder how many of us are like me . . . Observant where it's easy for us, and lax where it's not. Are we all as fit as we should be? Can we all say we aren't the weak link in the team for some reason that we could fix if we wanted to?

There *are* no DIR divers.

Because there *is* no perfection.

DIR is, to me, an unattainable ideal. An icon of a diver, like Odysseus is an icon of the adventurous man or Jesus the icon of the pious man.

We can never be DIR. There is always some detail that doesn't have the highest priority at the right moment. There is some thought, incomplete, some fin kick ineffective, some hand-sign unclear some movement that could be improved, some emotion misplaced.

So what can we do? The best we can do is to hope to emulate the model in some "secular" abbreviation of the word. Nothing more than this is achievable except in the deepest depths of delusion.

Needless to say, I am not DIR and I never will be.

My wife's dowry included a rowing machine. We've since added an adjustable weight bench and a dumbbell set. They're all pretty nice... paper weights.

I dunno for sure but I suspect that a huge majority of the in home gyms and workout systems wind up the same.

I think you're right based on the number of Bowflexes for sale on E-Bay. I got one 5 years ago and was determined to make a commitment to not give up. I have a system that's worked for me but it takes an understanding wife. Mine is right in the living room by the TV to where I have to stumble over it to get from the TV to the kitchen. If you put it in an obscure, remote corner room of the house.....out of sight, out of mind.

So...does it make sense to have "only DIR" "people" posting in the forum?

I understand the concept of not derailing the concept up for discussion, which was fitness. But, if you are discussing the topic..why would certain people not be able to post?

Guess Jeffg is locked out and he is one of the more DIR divers from what I can tell..
Ice diving is fairly unforgiving. The thing is, people don't care for the way he words things sometimes, but he is almost always factually correct.

There is an unspoken litmus test happening and it is very confusing. If DIR is a philosophy and not a certifying agency..then aren't divers free to choose what concepts they like? I mean, Halcyon boys certainly don't refuse to sell their gear to infidels....sorry different discussion, ignore me.

Well then ... you and Peter should put up a basketball hoop. You'll get a huge grin when you perfect a cross-over dribble and blow around him for a lay-up ... and I GUARANTEE you'll be getting an aerobic workout in the process ... :D

No!!! Stay away from basketball!!!

I played basketball regularly from '99 till 2005 (2 or 3 times a week). Folks were rolling ankles all the time. I use to do each ankle two or three times a year - even with ankle braces on.

Imagine trying to carry doubles on a sprained ankle. Imagine doing helicopters and back kicks. Or worse yet, imagine not being able to dive because of a sprained ankle.

I really don't get your issue, Catherine ...

If you understand the concept of not derailing the concept under discussion, then why are you trying so hard to make "non-DIR participation" the central issue? Isn't that derailing the concept under discussion?

Your objection just doesn't seem relevent to me ... since most of the people involved in this discussion have no DIR training.

I think the purpose of the forum is to understand these issues from the DIR way of looking at things. In effect, you're free to participate in the conversation ... what you are NOT free to do here is steer the thread into a DIR-bash. If that really bugs you, then go to Basic Discussions and start your own topic ... seems simple enough.

LOL - you got that right. That's how I got into scuba diving in the first place ... kept getting hurt playing hoops, and the wife told me to find something safer to do.

Of course, as soon as I stopped playing I gained 30 lbs ... :11:

Stationary bikes and swimming pools are my friends. Stationary bikes and swimming pools are my friends. Stationary bikes and swimming pools are my friends. (Maybe if I tell myself the same thing over and over again, I might actually start to believe it.)

what you are NOT free to do here is steer the thread into a DIR-bash.

I did not do that, I agreed with everything the OP said....

I have never bashed DIR...I like a lot of it, especially the priority of fitness, which I don't see elsewhere, as you do.

I think this accusation of DIR "bashers" is a bum rap, I must have missed something.

Meanwhile, I am working my butt off and still blowing up like a tick.

I wasn't referring to you, specifically ... and I still don't understand your previous post. Obviously, non-DIR members ARE posting to the thread ...
