Really? I thought I had to take a bunch of classes to learn how to swim backwards.

For some reason I haven't been able to learn that one on the Internet (or in the Holiday Inn pool).

That's 'cus your not Doing it Right.

Here is a related question. How many of you have equipment (treadmill, stationionary bike, weight set) at home that you can use, and does it help you keep to a standard workout schedule?

I can jog outside, I can do push-ups, crunches and such at home, but I don't... I do go to the gym though, it's just better for me at least... If you want to work out at home though then I think you can do it fairly easily without much special equipment (just jog, run up/down stairs, skip rope, etc. for cardio, and do push-ups, crunches, pull-ups, etc. for anaerobic exercise). The gym rocks, but home workout are better than nothing... if you have the discipline that is... if you don't then don't waste money on equipment either.

My wife's dowry included a rowing machine. We've since added an adjustable weight bench and a dumbbell set. They're all pretty nice... paper weights.

I dunno for sure but I suspect that a huge majority of the in home gyms and workout systems wind up the same.

if you don't want people to think that you are "DIR bashing" then don't make statements like this:

if you don't want to be classified as someone who bashes DIR stay away from loaded words like "groupie". and don't complain when you do use loaded words that people make certain assumptions...

As I posted I can't help how you filter my words. That is one of the problems this kind of communication. Neither can I help that instead of asking what I meant you jumped on the post as bashing.

There are Groupies in DIR just as there are Groupies in many other social, athletic and other sport circles. There are also nice people, professional people, arrogant people and people of most other types. Acknowledging that is not "bashing"; it is reality.

Speaking of Reality:
I have to get back exercising tomorrow after what the TV says was 3000 calories today. I don't think it was that many, but certainly more than normal. It doesn't matter what activity or sport a person does, physical and mental fitness is Important. Unfortunately it takes a lot of effort to go against society's norms and live in a healthy way. To me there is nothing as important as good physical and mental health.

I'm fortunate in living in a cold snowy area where I can shovel the "S" stuff by hand. Also, to have a fully equiped gym a few minutes away. Then at the upriver place there is wood to cut and split. Still I spend too, too much time on things like this that probably have a negative effect on my health. Guess, I need to do better.

I have a water rower in my condo, and a gym in the building. Both are used regularly, the rowing machine in the mornings, treadmill/weights on alternate evenings.

I love the rowing machine.

Actually, diving has provided me a good incentive to get back into shape, I've promised myself a new drysuit when I get back to the weight I want to be at. So far that carrot at the end of the stick is working nicely.

I dive. I enjoy it. That doesn't mean that I have to enjoy looking around to enjoy perfecting technique.

I do aikido. I enjoy it. That doesn't mean that I have to look for fights to enjoy perfecting technique.
It's not about enjoying in perfect technique. Since we dive within team and we can dive in potentialy silty or sensitive environment, good technique is neccesary to maintain required / expected level of safety for ourselves and for our team.

You do aikido for yourself. AFAIK there's no team aikido or doing aikido in potentialy danger environment.

Actually you do aikido for yourself and your partner. A good part of it is a "team" thing, more like dance than combat, and it is very good preparation for environs that are far more hazardous than silt. I was not denigrating the result of practice, just saying that there is nothing wrong with enjoying practice as a goal in and of itself.

I absolutely LOVE practicing diving skills. I had a goofy grin on my face after spending a half hour drilling with the guys at Point Lobos, when we were in Monterey, and my husband thought I was nuts.

Now, if I could just feel that way about exercising . . .

Well then ... you and Peter should put up a basketball hoop. You'll get a huge grin when you perfect a cross-over dribble and blow around him for a lay-up ... and I GUARANTEE you'll be getting an aerobic workout in the process ... :D
