Yes, everybody goes about their life mostly. You don't spend a lot of time outside though.

I cannot imagine it is a lot different when the temp is 107F. That is the highest temp ever recorded where I live. It was miserable hot and people stayed inside under the AC. You would need anti-freeze in your car with heat that high, water would not suffice as a coolant at those kinds of temperatures.
It was 41c (107f) here last week. I really don't think I could cope with the type of cold America is dealing with now.

Are people still getting out and going to work in those areas worst affected? Hopefully it eases up soon.

We've been a balmy 48-75 degrees lately. We've had a few hot days in the high 80s and low 90s up into first of Dec. I hate heat and during the six months of heat in AZ I tend to spend a lot more time indoors. When it gets really hot we even quit walking the dogs, as they can't tolerate it,either.
I've lived in very cold climates and I tolerate extreme cold ( less than 0 F) better than heat. The coldest I've ever experienced was -25 degrees in Wyoming with a -70 windchill. I can guarantee I spent very little time outdoors at those temps. Your lungs and any exposed skin freeze when its that cold.

-9 when I left for work. Now a balmy 2. That's in farenheit. Don't know what that translates to in centigrade. And frankly don't give rodent's posterior. I know it's damn cold in any fashion. With the windchill.last night on my hill about -40. For those complaining of it going down to anything above 40 - bite me. :=).
All schools canceled. Never had that happen when I was a kid due to the cold. Snow yes but never cold. Another reason we are becoming a nation of wusses. Little frostbite is good for a kid. Toughens em up. Not today though. On top of fighting bears and wolves we learned a thing or two in my day dammit! Kids today are soft. Too cold stay home, too hot turn up the AC, no wildlife to deal with, lucky bast#£ds.

i walked uphill to school both ways in four feet of snow carrying three musical instruments when I was a kid.
I did see where they canceled school in MN last week for cold but I think it was in the -20 to -30 range. Maybe they were concerned all the diesel school buses wouldn't run? I know when I was stationed in WY, the diesel trucks all sat in the truck stop or side of the roads when it got that cold.

Last week it was cold in my neck of the woods.

Minus 28 C during the week end, last Monday it went up to plus 6 and we had rain, talk about icy conditions.

Has enyone ever experienced the type of cold when nails pop out of the wood in the rafters, making gun shot sounds?

Now I'm in St-Lucia and the water temp was 84F on my last dive this morning.:D

On Friday when it was something like -17° F in the northeast, I irritated my friends and relatives there by posting on FaceBook the conditions here in ski country Colorado. I told them that an unusual overnight cold snap had created enough frost to delay our tee time by 20 minutes, and we had to wear light jackets or vests over our golf shirts to ward off the cold. (All true, BTW.)

Now, it did get nippy over the weekend, and it did snow, which created great conditions when my wife and I took our grandson skiing. Today is is currently in the high 40s, and we are supposed to hit 50° F in the afternoon.
Colorado is weird like that. I grew up near Boulder and loved the winters, except for the wind. Couldn't believe the drastic difference when I lived up closer to Cheyenne, just south of the border. Who knew?
Went to college 20 miles from Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. That constant winter cold in the winter was more than I could stand. They closed the steepest road in town for sledding all winter and we had huge walls of snow on the sidewalks, higher than my head. I really missed Colorado and those sunny, winter days. I remember on Christmas break we were warmer than my college friends in Florida. We went skiing in shorts that break!

where you heading?
He's for real. Boulder can get crazy warm fronts in the winter. I remember teasing my south Florida friends from college at Christmas break one winter because we were warmer than they were the entire vacation!
The only bad thing is that Boulder also gets crazy windstorms associated with warm fronts. That chinook wind can drive you out of your mind at times.

Here's a picture of a foxhunt in the high plains of California a few years ago. It was in the teens at night and our pipes froze in the horse trailer/camper. I can't remember why the electric cord had so much more ice than the hose.

Thank you for giving me the ammo to get the better half to stop pestering me about the money I spend on diving. . . I told her at least I haven't taken up photography, I googled the basic costs ;-)

I was about to start whining about it getting into the teens this week...then I remembered earlier years in Western WY, working outside in similar temps, and suddenly I warmed up a little.

When "dressing in layers" starts with 2 pairs of insulated Carhartt overalls, something is amiss.

I miss my carhartt's. . . not.

there is something awesome about only needing a couple of different light weight jackets, year round.

Yep, Everybody knows you start with a good heavy set of long johns. The 2 pair carhartts go on over that.
