Regardless of the c-cards, the amusement, whatever... I think that ANY AND EVERY diver with more experience has a responsibility to step in and try to help. Don't laugh, don't wait for the DM to do something; talk to her/him yourself if you can help.
My thoughts exactly ... sounds to me like the lady in question wasn't the one on the boat with the attitude problem ...

Couldn't agree more. Even if it's pansy reef diving at 20', we're still entering a hostile environment on a life support system. We've got to ALWAYS watch each others' back. F#@* pride.

I'm laughing at the whole boat full of experts who couldn't figure out that her problems stemmed from her inability to equalize the air spaces in her eyewear.....
Jeez. Don't forget the coke alert, guy. Just like a lot of posts about bad buddies, the initial post also says a lot about SteveDiver.

Dont' worry SteveDiver, there will always be somebody that is a worse diver than you. Unfortunately, that doesn't do anything to enhance your skills.

It is unfortunate that she was both ignorant and arrogant. Education, training and experience are easy cures ignorance. Bad attitudes are much harder to cure.

I think we may be a little too hard on this woman. I'm more inclined to belive that she ment 6 dives post certtification. The poster mentioned she was arrogant..well.. I wasn't there.. so I don't know.. but I think they might have been a bit out of line for ridiculing her.

O.K.

I think the initial poster has figured out that we don't take kindly to this kind of ridicule.

So, I'm gonna give SteveDiver a break...I suspect that his post was just...hmm...enthusiastic. I'm sure that no one on the boat - including Steve - teased or laughed at this gal. Most folks witnessing someone displaying difficulties are empathetic and actually feel a little embarrassed themselves. They want to help but don't know how to approach the situation. It can be difficult to help without coming across as a jerk, yourself. The trick is to gain her trust and respect before attempting to help her with her skills and I think the best way to do this is to just spend time with someone like this...just make a new friend.

There was a lady on our liveaboard who had a Rescue Diver-AOW C-card and a Nitrox C-card with ONLY SIX DIVES!!!!!!!! I could not believe this...I asked the DM on the boat to verify what SHE told me and he stated that is what she put down on the release paperwork. It was apparent that she was a new diver especially when she did the giant stride and fell face first in the water. She was yelled at by the Divemaster because she sucked her air down fast and left her divebuddy behind. On the second dive the Divemaster told her to look straight ahead when doing the giant stride (basic right) telling her this after he had to turn her air on. Well, she didn't listen and went face first AGAIN loosing her goggles!!! My divebuddy and I were cracking up laughing saying," see that!, there is an excellent Rescue Diver". Before the trip ended mostly everyone on the boat was laughing at her and she was the topic of conversation. The ironic thing about her is that she was arrogant and quick to offer advise and tell everyone how wonderful she is. Question: Why did the DM let her dive when he knew that her c-cards are B.S.?????

exageration if not outright fabrication. GOGGLES ! I would have thought with 100-200 dives you would have known by now they are called MASK....or maybe your instructor gave a cert he should not have, thats if you have 100-200 dives !

The only thing more distressing than this story is the way she was treated.

I hope for her sake that she encounters more helpful people to dive with in the future.

Look we ate dinner and breakfast with her before the first dive. We had a nice conversation except when it came to diving there was NO talking to her what so ever. One could not offer any advise to her because she knew it all. We avoided talking about certain aspects of diving in order to avoid a confrontation with her. This lady was very strong headed, she is also in the Military and we all listened to her wonderful combat stories and how skilled she was as a soldier. I am not claiming to be the Great diver and I never compare myself to others. I always help others out and am not afraid to ask for help when needed, pride should not get in the way. On the third dive her sausage was free flowing in the water (came unrolled) I stopped her in the water and rolled it up and fastened it for her, she shook her head at me with a what the hell are you doing look on her face. Regardless, of her demeanor if she were to get in trouble I would help her rather she wanted help or not. We watched her on the dives. She would never ask for help however if she needed it she would have no choice but to be helped. Yes, it was funny to see her belly flop face first in the water two times. Yes, we laughed. Yes, the DM yelled at her several times one time for the incorrect giant stride and another for going way to deep. She was thouroughly briefed before each dive and she made the decision not to listen to anybody or heed the directions from the Divemaster. It was serious and justified IMO to be strict on the divers. We were on a liveaboard 100's of miles from land where if she got injured the coast guard would have to transport via air. We never laughed in front of her and everyone on the boat treated her with respect. By the second day of the trip everyone would listen to her talk then get away from her asap. The converastions with her were one sided only. Before one judges the character of myself and others on the boat it is important to understand the full facts of the situation. Without typing a novel to explain the situation I attempted to keep it simple and short. Of course, doing this left it open to ridicule from the all mighty judges who rush to judgement without investigating the facts....

OK ... well, all we have to go on is what you posted ... both in your original post and subsequent responses ...

SteveDiver:
She made her bed and now she can lay in it. Why attempt to justify her ignorance?
SteveDiver:
Then you have some people (previous response) that attempt to make an excuse for the ignorant actions of another. Those that attempt to justify the ill actions of another are more and likely doing it themselves....
SteveDiver:
Ummmm...I think it will be you that they will be laughing at.....

If you don't want to subject yourself to people "rushing to judgment", perhaps you should try not doing so yourself ... after all, on the internet, we can only base your "character" on what you say and how you choose to say it ...

Mr. 500-1000 dives, The term goggles was used intentionally as this is what she yelled out "I lost my goggles". Those that accuse others of misrepresenting their dives are more then likely the ones that are misrepresenting. I have nothing to prove by inflating my dives as I am secure with myself .
