How can we help them? If they're on a dive and not studying with some instructor who could straighten them out - what are their fellow divers supposed to do? Steve's said they offered advice etc *to no avail*. It's all very well saying some divers put on a front etc because they're intimidated. It's not every intimidated diver which rejects all advice, because they know better - IMO it takes a special brand of stubborness (if that's the right word) to do this.
If I ended up on a dive or even on a boat with someone like this I would avoid them like the plague because I do not want them to ruin my day, force me to rescue them or, at worst, endanger me. I would urge everyone else to do the same, unless you are their instructor or DM. They are a danger and not your responsibility.
