Has anyone ever made a DIY reel? I'm talking about a finger reel. I have a stainless steel film canister roll, but I'm not quite sure how to put it together to ensure that it won't just un-spool unexpectedly.

Are there any tricks to finger rolls?

A finger reel? If you mean a spool I've made those before. Mind you I have a little metal working lathe in my garage. Some Delrin and a lathe and a spool is pretty easy to make.

Now a real reel :-) That a little more work, but it can be done if you are handy and have access to a few tools. I'm sure there are others who have some creative ways to make a spool or reel with minimal tooling.

Best Regards,

Mat.

I've made a few reels. I used HDPE for the spool part and 6061 AL for the handle, line guide, and axle. Used a lath, mill, and drill press.

Here are some pitures of a jump/gap reel I made.

Most people use a double ender through one of the holes in the side.
