Hello hello

I am going to the houston area in may of this year, and i'll be there for about a month. i'd love to get a couple dives in while im there. can anyone recommend me any good places in the area? I was also wondering what kind of conditions to expect at that time of year...vis, water temp (so i can pick decent exposure protection. so far, all my dives are dry, but i am assuming i will only need a wet suit there in may), etc etc. any info you can give me would be wonderful.

and as one quick last request...could someone link me to a decent dive shop in the area as well? i'll be needing to rent gear and whatnot.

anyway, thanks in advance. :)

There are a few good dive sites here. Do a search for the Blue Lagoon, or Twin Lakes.
Water temp from my dive log. for BL in May last year was 76, and TL in May was 70. A 3mm full should be good to go!

Probably the best the area has to offer. May/June is fairly reliable on seas but there is always an 'IF' with the FGB. Most Texans will be wearing a 3mm suit, some will have 5mm; so you might be OK with just a bathing suit. The site will like you to another site with historical sea and weather conditions. It would be a shame to miss the opportunity.

Oh my, i had forgotten about this thread. oops.

thanks for the responses. i really appreciate it.

Zendiver, i am interested in any diving. :D i have never done any lake diving, so that would be interesting to check out. blue water is always good too.

i wouldnt mind checking out the gulf if i get a chance. can i dive out of galveston at all?

and can anyone direct me to a good shop in the area that has decent priced rentals? i have no clue where any shops are down there.

again, thanks for the replies (that took me ages to get back to. sorry!)

Blue Lagoon - Man made lake about 70 miles north of downtown Houston. Max depth around 30 feet if you bury your computer in the muck. No real fish, just a few darter fish and a few boat wreaks.

Twin Lakes - Man made lake about 25 miles south of downtown Houston. Max depth is around 50 feet. Has fish and some wreaks.

Flower Gardens - About a 100 miles off the coast in the Gulf of Mexico. Beautiful diving, as close as you can get to Cozumel without leaving the states. Only concerns are the Gulf weather patterns. ;o)

WW Diving Co. - My LDS. In Humble, about 19 miles north of downtown Houston. Full service dive shop with everything you would need to get wet while you are down here.

Be sure to post here when you get here, I am sure several of us would be happy to join you somewhere to get wet. :)

for rental try Divers Paradise in Webster on I-45
281-332-9982. they have tons of rental gear. They don't do any Gulf diving though.
there is no good diving in Houston. Drive down to Freeport and take the MV Fling out to the Flower Gardens or such. In May you will only need a shorty.
Google and check out Bay Area Divers for trips and activities that in the Gulf.
