To be honest I did keep up with rapid descent for a while. I don't kick to get down, instead I just exhale the air in my bc and let gravity do the rest. When I went to PDC I started using the slower method, just taking my time to descend. Being new to the sport, I'm always trying some new tachniques. Some I'll keep doing some I won't.
 
I personally really enjoy the negative descent. Provided buddy communication is intact and the equalising is ok- as always just keep an eye on your depths- it's easy to over shoot a planned depth- and if your diving Nitrox- that may not be a pretty picture!

The USNDM (US Navy Dive Manule) states that a diver will not exceed the rate of 60'/min.

Check it again, I believe you'll find 75ft/min for descents.
