Can you explain why to vent by my ears? Does equalization push out that much air?

Guess I should have explained that I was a little off topic with my suggestion. I wasn't directly addressing your bubble issue. I was just adding that holes over your ears prevent air pockets from forming in/around your outer ear. The holes allow the air out of your inner ear, which allows your ears to flood, which makes it easier to equalize.

I think cutting around my face so the hood doesn't come over my mask would be good, but so far I have only seen a BARE that I can cut....any suggestions. Thanks again for all the help.

I think you can and should trim any hood, so that it doesn't interfere with your mask seat. I even had to trim mine below my mouth so it wouldn't pinch my lower lip when I had the reg in my mouth.

I hope you meant outer ear. ;)

ie the water can get into your outer ear (canal) and flood displacing the water as the air can escape through the holes cut in the hood and therefore you can equalise easier. I just wanted to clarify and was trying to avoid confusion in my last post by stating the outer ear refs without mentioning middle or inner ear - some people reading can get confused about such details.

Hmm i deliberately want my hood covering the mask seal. Any exposed skin such as a gap between mask seal and hood gets cold. I generally want as little skin as possible exposed to the sea.

All great advice, so far, just want to add a word of caution- please make sure you aren't wearing the hood when you punch/cut/burn/blast the hole. That's the function of a really good dive buddy.

Good Advice Ynot, my buddy is also my hubby....I think it would be good for us both if he would let me burn a few holes in his head. :)
Okay so if I understand the holes should go around the crown and towards the back of the hood so it continues to vent when I'm horizontal. Better to trim away from my mask seat if possible (except for exposing skin). Does that sound about right?
