Hood and mask fit or interference?

I dive in mid 30's to upper 50's. When I want a hood (most of the time) the mask goes under the hood, and the hood overlaps the mask seal a bit. I find that putting the mask strap under the hood leads to fewer mask leaks

How cold does it have to be to be uncomfortable would vary from person to person.
I've seen plenty of people wear hoods in 70-80 F water.
Monterey water temps range from about 48-58 F cold.

Wearing a hood to conserve body heat is one thing. Tying to avoid brain freeze is another story.

If my coldest water was 48F I'd trim for clearance (no overlap) just for the simplicity of it.

If air is getting into the hood and the hood is unvented it will make the stap and attached mask to all sorts of nasty crap. Having the strap under the hood iolates the mask. Most mask/hood combos end up with cold water openings on the side of the hood where the strap exits . If your are OK to the mid 30s you have found a nice combo.
