I used a (rented) honking reg for a few dives as a newbie in the Philippines. It would only honk underwater, and it only started in the second half of each dive.

It breathed OK - and the local pro assured me it was safe. But it was very distracting to spend your underwater quiet time sounding an elderly donkey with a cold, and it gave everyone something to laugh about afterwards.

My Atomic SS1 honks too. It's never been a problem, and it breathes great. Dive it!

I have an SS-1 also. No honk. Same manufacturer. Hmmm...

Thanks for the great advice everyone! Maybe I should have played with the new reg in the bath tub rather than just hook it up to the tank.

Major pet peeve of mine, while a property of water is dampening things like towels and anything it touches, but I think what was meant here is damping.
Dampening = getting something wet
Damping = The dissipation of vibratory energy in solid media and structures with time or distance. It is analogous to the absorption of sound in air.

You are correct sir...to much wine last night on my part...Are you an editor? Tech Admin...please make this guy Scubaboard's editor...LOL

My MK25's S600 honk as well. The harder I pull the louder it honks.

I can't imagine how much louder it was before they "reduced" the noise :D

My mk2 did this; the tech who rebuilt it said it was a resonance with the piston spring. He put a shim under it and the problme was solved. You can try it as is; I'm pretty sure it's not dangerous, only annoying. It'll probably honk intermittently under water if it's a similar situation as my mk2 had. Seeing as how it's a new expensive reg, I'm sure the shop you bought it from will fix it.

If I ever go spearfishing for geese, I'll be sure to get an Atomic regulator first.
LOL!

Actually, that's doable. When one of 'em dives down for a fish, you gotta' lead 'em before you shoot.

Limit, two.

This is just too good to resist...

On second thought... no it's not!!!

A happy honking B2 user here.

My ATX-50 did the same thing this weekend when I dusted it off for my last two weekends of diving for the year. I haven't noticed it do that before, but wasn't too concerned because my older US Divers regs used to do that before I traded 'em in.

I was a little alarmed when, after my first breath on the dry reg, I met exhalation resistance. Never had that before, but once I got the first breath out, it worked fine. I dove with it, knowing that my first dive wouldn't be deeper than 20 ft, I would have a buddy within arm's reach, and I had nothing strange to report about my alternate. Had no problem with the reg on the dive. Second dive was more of the same, and went off without a hitch.

My thought is that after this weekend's diving, the regs are due for service anyways. Anyone else ever experience exhalation resistance? By that, I mean like trying to blow through a hose that someone has covered with their thumb. When it freed up, it was like the thumb was taken off the hose, and it only happened on the first exhalation.

Most honking I've seen actually comes from the first stage (on piston style regulators). In any case, you should not have to live with it on a new one. Harmless, but scares the wildlife away.
