I have tried everything from elastic bands to lots of clips. They either wash out or become loose and I can't see well at all with hair floating all around. I've tried the overall head cover but I just can't wear it, too tight on the neck. Has anyone tried any methods that work well to keep long hair from floating all over?

I often dive with a baseball cap, you just need to make it a little tighter than normal, and you could have the long hair ponytail style out of the hole in the back.

Damselfish:
you can use a beanie instead of a full hood, keeps hair under control and adds a little warmth, but has nothing around the neck, just a chin strap. Or read some of these threads for lots of suggestions -

Thanks, I didn't know you could look through archives.

I have really long hair and to make matters worse, it's naturally curly. Here's what I've done that seems to work, so far...
1. Get a hood - may need to go up an extra size to accomodate the hair.
2. Braids or gentle elastic bands that don't snag. I use a band every couple of inches creating one long pony tail.
3. Slick conditioner through your hair for the little tiny hairs around your face. I know this sounds kinda funky but it works (got the suggestion from another scubaboard post). Put on your hood and then tuck the little hairs underneath, while lifting the edge of the hood.
4. When you get home - immediately condition your hair. Salt water dries the heck out of hair.

:fro: If the hood is too tight, it's the wrong hood. A hood is a great piece of thermal protection in California waters. I went from 3mm to 5mm and was blown away on the increased comfort level. Back to my first point ... what I found when buying hoods is that there were 3 different "seam" patterns. One was very tight on my neck arteries, one was OK and one was just perfect. Try different hoods in your LDS.

Sometimes a hood isn't necessarily too tight, but some of us just hate the feeling of anything around the neck.
